DGF School Lockdown: Families React to Hallway Closure (2026)

A sense of unease gripped the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (DGF) school district on March 3rd when two of its schools were suddenly placed under a temporary hallway closure. This unexpected development sparked curiosity and concern among students, staff, and families alike.

The incident began with a report of a person of interest near the district, prompting a swift response from law enforcement authorities. Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting assured the public that there was no direct threat to any school, and that law enforcement had successfully made contact with the individual involved.

Despite this reassurance, the situation remained shrouded in uncertainty. The sheriff's office refrained from releasing the identity of the person of concern or providing details about the specific circumstances that led to the closure.

Superintendent Shannon Hunstad addressed the incident in a letter to DGF families, emphasizing that students and staff remained secure throughout and that classes continued uninterrupted. Hunstad further confirmed that the buildings were now secure and that normal operations had resumed.

However, for families like Kari Schjerveim, a grandparent with students at both school sites, the uncertainty persisted. Schjerveim expressed her initial concern upon hearing about the lockdown, stating, "You don't know anything; you just know they're on lockdown, but you don't get any more information."

The worry was heightened by the fact that Schjerveim had grandchildren in both buildings, making it even more challenging to navigate the situation.

"It's really scary to know, especially with a child in the elementary too, a grandson in the elementary. We didn't know what was going on," she said.

While the superintendent's letter provided some relief, Schjerveim and other families were left with lingering questions.

"That was relieving, but not knowing is really hard of what actually is going on," Schjerveim added.

This incident serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics that can unfold within school communities, where safety concerns and information management intersect. It highlights the delicate balance between maintaining a sense of security and providing transparent communication to alleviate anxiety and uncertainty.

As we reflect on this event, it prompts us to consider: How can schools and law enforcement authorities effectively communicate during such situations to ensure the well-being of students, staff, and families? And what role does transparency play in building trust and confidence within these communities?
