In a surprising turn of events, James Harden has been traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers while the LA Clippers have acquired Darius Garland in this major deal, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Clippers are gaining Garland, a two-time NBA All-Star who has shown great promise, while the Cavaliers are bringing in Harden, the 2018 MVP and a player selected for the All-NBA team in 2025. Additionally, the Clippers will benefit from a second-round draft pick from Cleveland slated for 2026.
What’s intriguing here is that this trade materialized in under a week. Harden played a game against the Brooklyn Nets on January 25, then traveled with the Clippers for their road games, contributing to a victory in Utah and a defeat in Denver. Over the weekend, he was seen visiting Arizona State, his college alma mater, but just hours before a game on Sunday, he was ruled out due to 'personal reasons.' This absence was followed by another report stating he would not play against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night, coinciding with rumors about the trade.
For the Cavaliers, this acquisition is significant as it enhances their backcourt dynamics, allowing Harden to team up with Donovan Mitchell, a shooting guard who is expected to be an All-Star in 2026. Importantly, Harden had the right to veto any trade and holds a player option this offseason, which includes some guaranteed money. Thus, this trade positions him with a team that is looking to avoid the Play-In Tournament and strengthens his chances of securing a new contract.
