What's Happening Today: Central Banks, Job Data, and Market Insights (2026)

What key events should we keep an eye on today?

EUROPEAN SESSION

Today's main focus during the European session will revolve around the monetary policy decisions from the Bank of England (BoE) and the European Central Bank (ECB). The Bank of England is anticipated to maintain its Bank Rate at 3.75%, with expectations indicating a split vote of 6-3, though some analysts predict a more divided vote of 7-2. The accompanying guidance in their statement is likely to remain steady, directing attention towards the Monetary Policy Report (MPR) forecasts and the diverse perspectives of individual committee members.

Meanwhile, for the ECB, a continuation of the current policy rate at 2.00% is expected, adhering to a strategy that remains data-driven and evaluated on a meeting-by-meeting basis. Much attention will be directed toward President Christine Lagarde, who, although not expected to unveil significant new insights, will certainly face inquiries concerning the strength of the euro. A shift away from a neutral tone in her remarks could potentially influence the currency's value.

AMERICAN SESSION

As we transition into the American session, the spotlight shifts to the upcoming US Jobless Claims and Job Openings data. Initial Jobless Claims are projected to reach 212,000 compared to last week's 209,000, while Continuing Claims are forecasted to rise to 1.85 million from the prior 1.827 million. There has been a noticeable improvement in the Jobless Claims figures, hinting at a possible uptick in labor market activity. However, we’ll need to await the US Non-Farm Payroll (NFP) report next Wednesday for a clearer picture of employment trends.

Additionally, we'll receive the Job Openings data for December. Although this is considered a lagging indicator, it provides valuable insights into the conditions of the labor market. Job openings have been trending back toward normal levels after the dramatic increase experienced in 2021, stabilizing slightly above pre-pandemic figures. Experts anticipate around 7.250 million job openings in December, up from 7.146 million in November.
