The WNBA and its players' union engaged in a crucial three-hour meeting in New York, aiming to break the stalemate in their collective bargaining agreement (CBA) negotiations. With the current CBA extension having expired on January 9th, the pressure is on to avoid potential disruptions to the upcoming season.
Union president Nneka Ogwumike, accompanied by Brianna Turner and Alysha Clark, remained tight-lipped after the meeting, refusing to comment. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the labor relations committee, including New York Liberty owners Clara Wu and Joe Tsai, were also in attendance.
But here's where it gets controversial: the union claims they are awaiting a response to their proposal from around Christmas, which included a significant 30% gross revenue share for the players. However, a source close to the negotiations revealed that the league didn't view this proposal as substantially different from the previous one. This anonymous source, speaking to the Associated Press, shed light on the sensitive nature of the discussions.
The league's latest offer, made last month, guarantees a maximum base salary of $1 million in 2026, potentially rising to $1.3 million with revenue sharing. This is a substantial increase from the current $249,000, and could even grow to $2 million over the agreement's lifespan.
The two parties are currently in a 'status quo' period, following the expiration of the CBA extension. They agreed to a moratorium, temporarily halting the initial stages of free agency and franchise tag decisions. If a new CBA isn't reached soon, the 2026 season could face delays, and the expansion draft for Toronto and Portland has already been affected.
The WNBA's last CBA was announced in January 2020, a month after it was agreed upon. With the regular season scheduled to start on May 8th, the clock is ticking to finalize the new agreement and initiate free agency, which was originally planned for last month.
